How to Plan the Perfect Solo Cruise

By Kim Jackson

In a world where independence and adventure are increasingly valued, solo cruising is emerging as a growing trend among travelers. Traditionally seen as a couple, group or family activity, cruising also attracts solo travelers seeking the blend of luxury, convenience and freedom that only a cruise can offer.

Who Travels Alone?

Since solo cruising is no longer a niche market, the cruise industry has recognized the unique needs and desires of solo adventurers. Some of our solo clients are single or dont have a regular travel companion, while others are married but opt to travel on their own. More women are joining the growing number of solo travelers, drawn to cruising for its perfect balance of independence and the security of traveling with a group. We also see groups who love traveling together on our hosted voyages, yet still prefer their own staterooms.

Why Would You Travel Alone?

For the same reasons that cruising is an appealing option to couples and families, it is a wonderfully easy and relaxing way for solo travelers to explore the world. One of the top reasons for traveling solo is the freedom it offers.

No need to coordinate with others or compromise on your schedule you can come and go as you please. When traveling solo within a group, you can socialize as much or as little as you wish, with your stateroom as your sanctuary.

Independent travel can sometimes feel daunting, but cruises provide a safe and secure environment. With everything taken care of — from accommodations to meals and entertainment — solo travelers can relax and enjoy themselves without stressing over details.

How Cruise Lines Cater to Solo Travelers

Today, cruise lines are more often aligning their onboard and ashore activities for solo cruisers. You are already among like-minded travelers, so making friends can be as easy as attending a hosted onboard cocktail party or dinner. Celebrity Cruises sets aside a solos’ table at dinner and offers help with meeting other solo travelers. Silversea’s voyages include a Champagne welcome reception where fellow solo cruisers can connect. Plus, on some sailings, there are Gentlemen Hosts available to greet solo passengers. Norwegian Cruise Line offers single staterooms that share access to an exclusive common area on select ships, where you’ll find TVs, a bartender and hosted gatherings. Solo travelers sailing on Seabourn may be more likely to be invited to a table hosted by an officer or staff member.

Hosted Voyages

Cruise Specialists offers our clients the opportunity to join a wide variety of hosted groups. These are especially beneficial for solo travelers who love to socialize, offering the chance to forge new friendships. Our veteran hosts know just how to warmly welcome everyone and ensure a smooth and unforgettable voyage.

What Do Solo Cruisers Pay?

Traditionally, fares are based on double occupancy; that is, two people sharing a cabin or suite. When one person sails alone, they have historically paid as though they are two people. However, recognizing the increasing demand for solo cruising, many cruise lines offer special fares or opportunities for solo cruisers.

Solo Supplements

When solo travelers pay 200% of the cabin rate, this is called 100% single supplement. As a sailing date approaches, some cruise lines may decide to provide some of the unsold cabins for a special price. Other cruise lines offer reduced supplements further out in advance. We would consider 50% (and below) a good value. Reduced supplements or even waived supplements (0%) are based on availability and can sell out quickly.

Single Occupancy Cabins

Several cruise lines offer single occupancy cabins that are specially priced. They are generally smaller; however, that is changing too. For example, Celebrity’s Edge-Class ships offer Infinite Veranda solo staterooms. Royal Caribbean offers studio cabins called virtual balcony cabins (inside cabins with screens projecting live images from outside) as well as true balconies. Cunard’s single staterooms are some of the largest in the industry. Pro Tip: These specialty cabins are limited, and considering the high demand, it’s wise to book well in advance to secure your spot.

Oceania Allura Cruise Review: Refined, Inspired, and Absolutely Oceania

I recently had the opportunity to step aboard Oceania Cruises’ newest ship, Allura, and I’ll say this upfront: she is spectacular. I joined for a short sailing to experience the ship firsthand and attend the christening, and Allura made a lasting impression.

Postcards From A Regent World Cruise: The Amazing Americas

Of the many attributes of the countries in the Americas, some of our favorites are the natural beauty, stunning flora and fauna and their daring-do spirit. We went searching for these and others during our stops in South, Central and North America during the first leg of our world cruise on Regent’s Seven Seas Mariner.

Postcards From A World Cruise: The Adventure Begins

The adventure began with an included two nights/three days pre-cruise in Miami: one night was spent at the InterContinental Miami and the second night on board the Seven Seas Mariner. This InterContinental hotel turned out to be comfortable, luxurious and iconic: it is from here that Miami's 35-foot neon “Big Orange” drop occurs each New Year’s Eve. The hotel has attractive contemporary décor, art including the monumental 18-foot Henry Moore "Spindle" sculpture in the lobby, and ocean views; it is conveniently located in the heart of the Magic City -- five minutes from PortMiami. Club InterContinental, the hotel's lounge for suite guests (other guests can purchase day passes for $50) offers breakfast, afternoon tea and happy hour with wine, beers and tapas.
