Queen Mary 2: Refining an Icon

By Lisa Vongphachanh

Few ships in the world command the same admiration and prestige as Queen Mary 2. It is the flagship of Cunard, and represents the pinnacle of Transatlantic travel, carrying guests across the Atlantic for decades. Now, as Queen Mary 2 prepares to enter dry dock this spring, it will begin an exciting new chapter with thoughtful refurbishments designed to enhance every aspect of the guest experience while preserving the timeless character that has made it an icon.

Honoring Tradition While Looking Ahead

The 2027 refurbishment is not about reinventing Queen Mary 2. Instead, it is about refining what guests already love while ensuring it remains the benchmark for luxury ocean travel for generations to come.

Scheduled for March 31 through May 9, 2027, the project represents a significant investment in the future of the world's only true ocean liner. Every enhancement has been carefully planned to maintain Queen Mary 2's distinctive Art Deco elegance while introducing modern comforts and elevated experiences.

Elevated Accommodations

One of the most notable enhancements will be the addition of 31 new accommodations, including 16 new Princess Grill Suites and 15 new Britannia staterooms.

Guests staying in the Grill Suites can expect a complete refresh featuring sophisticated new interiors, luxurious spa-inspired bathrooms and updated furnishings. The experience extends beyond the suites themselves, with both the Queens Grill and Princess Grill restaurants receiving updates designed to preserve their celebrated sense of exclusivity and refinement.

Many of the Britannia and Britannia Club staterooms will also receive updates, including refreshed soft furnishings, redesigned décor and beautifully enhanced bathrooms, creating an even more comfortable and stylish retreat at sea.

Enhanced Outdoor Living

Queen Mary 2's decks have always been a defining part of the Transatlantic experience, where guests enjoy taking in ocean views and sea breezes.

Guests can look forward to additional outdoor deck space, where classic deck games will remain a beloved part of life on board, alongside paddle tennis, pickleball and shuffleboard.

Whether wrapped in a blanket crossing the North Atlantic or enjoying warm Caribbean breezes, these outdoor spaces will continue to embody the romance of ocean travel.

A Better Experience for Four-Legged Travelers

Kennel Lounge

As the only ship at sea offering dedicated kennels, Queen Mary 2 has long been a favorite among guests traveling with their pets. The upcoming refurbishment will make the experience even better.

Enhancements include redesigned kennels, increased capacity, an expanded outdoor walking area and a stylishly refurbished owners' lounge. These updates ensure both pets and their owners can enjoy greater comfort during an ocean crossing.

The redesigned spa will offer an elevated wellness experience focused on helping guests revive, refresh and restore. Thoughtfully updated spaces and enhanced amenities will create an inviting sanctuary at sea, complementing the ship's luxury lifestyle offerings.

Shopping and Entertainment Elevated

Retail experiences on board will also receive a significant upgrade, with a new collection of luxury boutiques creating a refined shopping environment worthy of Queen Mary 2's elegant atmosphere.

Illuminations

Meanwhile, one of the ship's most celebrated venues, Illuminations, will undergo a major transformation.

Already recognized as the largest planetarium at sea, the venue will be upgraded with state-of-the-art technology and immersive new programming designed to captivate and inspire.

Guests can also continue to enjoy performances at the Royal Court Theatre, featuring acclaimed West End and Broadway productions, along with Cunard's popular Insights enrichment program featuring distinguished speakers and cultural experts.

Designed by Those Who Know Her Best

Guiding the vision for the refurbishment is Chris Finch, one of Queen Mary 2's original designers. Drawing inspiration from classic Hollywood glamour and British heritage, the refreshed interiors will feel contemporary yet immediately recognizable.

Acclaimed illustrator Tanu Vasu has also partnered with Cunard to bring the refurbishment vision to life through a bespoke series of illustrations that capture the elegance, artistry and sense of occasion that define the Queen Mary 2 experience.

The Future of an Icon

With refreshed accommodations, enhanced wellness facilities, expanded outdoor spaces, upgraded entertainment venues and thoughtfully modernized guest experiences, the 2027 refurbishment ensures that Queen Mary 2 will continue to provide guests with unforgettable voyages.

Holland America Grand Australia and New Zealand Cruise: Welcome to Australia

Welcome to Australia, in the beautiful city of Cairns. We have an unusual overnight here, allowing lots of time to explore. Our destination was the Cairns Botanic Gardens, a gorgeous oasis a few miles from the port. We took an Uber to the entrance and spent time wandering around the trails and special gardens. This is a very large facility, incorporating the Tanks Arts Center and a modern Visitor Center. It includes a Rainforest Boardwalk, saltwater and freshwater lakes, and a vast collection of native plants.
