Explora Journeys Enters the River Cruising Market

By Lisa Vongphachanh

Just a few years ago, we introduced our clients to a new cruise line. One that promised an entirely new way to explore, combining the freedom of the open seas with the understated elegance and refinement of European hospitality. They call it an Ocean State of Mind.

Many of our Cruise Consultants cruised with Explora Journeys for a firsthand experience and were greatly impressed. The cruise line is indeed a new form of luxury travel, one that has already begun to rival brands that have been in the luxury space for decades.

And now, Explora Journeys is venturing into Europe’s iconic waterways. They have yet to release details but intend to open bookings in 2027. As we anticipate the ship design, experiences on board and itineraries, there are a few things we can speculate based on our experiences sailing with Explora Journeys.

Ship size

Cruising along the rivers of Europe restricts the width and height of ships, which is why most river ships are similar in size. Ships must be narrow enough to pass through various locks and bridge piers, and low enough to glide beneath bridges and through canals. It is likely that Explora Journeys river ships will be similar in size to their competitors, but we are eager to learn how they plan to get creative with their spaces. Considering this brand was built with the idea of the world’s finest boutique hotels combined with the boundless freedom of the ocean, we anticipate spacious designs that offer ample room to connect with the destinations that surround them.

Suite expectations

spacious suites

Despite being relatively similar in exterior size, river cruise lines vary significantly in capacity – ranging from 190 to less than 90 guests.

While some lines maximize the number of cabins offered, others put an emphasis on large suites and public spaces.

It is likely that Explora Journeys will likely align with the latter approach.

We expect the line to offer the same elegant home-away-from-home atmosphere found on its ocean ships.

Atmosphere on board

The onboard aesthetic is likely to feature muted natural tones that exude a sense of calm, an unhurried journey centered around connecting to the destinations discovered along the river. Explora Journeys is likely to want to offer its loyal guests the same ambiance they have grown to love on the ocean ships.

Dining on board

Explora Journeys offers a variety of culinary experiences on their ocean ships, with menus inspired by the stories and traditions behind each dish. From seasonal Italian dishes to refined French cuisine, guests enjoy an unforgettable culinary experience. We anticipate that, in addition to a gourmet dining experience on board, the line will offer unique experiences that further connect guests to the destinations they are visiting. Perhaps they’ll offer Austrian specialties paired with local wines and a French-inspired menu showcasing ingredients sourced just miles away, turning every meal into part of the journey.

Unforgettable culinary experiences

As we await further details, one thing we know for sure – a river cruise with Explora Journeys is sure to be an immersive experience that reveals the soul of a destination, not just the highlights.

Why Regent

Why Regent's New Solara Sports Deck is a Big Deal for Luxury Cruisers

Regent has taken a different approach with Seven Seas Prestige. Perched atop Deck 14, the Solara Sports Deck will be a vibrant open-air haven, designed with the same attention to aesthetics and comfort as the ship's lounges, suites and specialty restaurants. The new venue will not feel out of place on the ultra-luxury Seven Seas Prestige. What Regent appears to have done exceptionally well is to integrate these activities without compromising the elegant atmosphere guests expect. Regent’s plans include beautiful timbers around the courts, inviting shaded lounge areas, with touches such as soft fabric seating, fresh landscaping throughout, and unobstructed ocean views. The area will function as much as a scenic observation and relaxation space as it will be an activity venue. Even if you ne
