Holland America Grand World Voyage

By Kirsten Ulmer and Alex Tokar

The Holland America Grand World Voyage aboard the Zuiderdam commenced on January 4, 2025, from Fort Lauderdale. Over the past few weeks, passengers have explored a variety of captivating destinations, each offering unique experiences and insights.

George Town, Cayman Islands

The journey’s first stop was George Town, where many attractions are conveniently located near Harbor Drive and a couple of blocks inland. Passengers strolled along Front Street, noting familiar Caribbean shops like Effy Jewelry, Tanzanite International, and Tortuga Rum Cake. The midday heat was intense, and with limited shade, many found respite in the few available spots. The streets were relatively quiet, with empty seats in ice cream parlors and local restaurants, perhaps due to the overwhelming heat.

Puerto Limón, Costa Rica

In Puerto Limón, Cruise Specialists guests had the opportunity to visit the Sloth Sanctuary and embark on a motorized boat ride along the Tortuguero Canals. Despite a morning downpour that left everyone drenched, spirits remained high. The boat tour offered glimpses of sloths nestled in trees and a variety of amphibians and birds. An unexpected encounter with armed police patrolling the canals served as a stark reminder of the area’s challenges with drug trafficking. A visit to a small banana plantation provided insights into local agriculture, and the day concluded at the Aviarios del Caribe Sloth Sanctuary, where dedicated staff rescue and rehabilitate injured or orphaned sloths.

Panama Canal Transit

Transiting the Panama Canal was a highlight, with commentary provided by Cruise & Travel Director Kimberly starting at 6:00 am. Passengers marveled at this engineering wonder, appreciating the intricate system that connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

Cusco and Machu Picchu, Peru

An overland Cruise Specialists excursion to Cusco and Machu Picchu offered a deep dive into Incan history. In Cusco, travelers explored significant sites including the Cathedral of Cusco in the Plaza de Armas.

An evening cultural performance showcased local dance and encouraged audience participation. Despite some experiencing altitude discomfort, the availability of oxygen provided relief. The following day began early with a journey on the luxurious Belmond Hiram Bingham train to Machu Picchu. The scenic ride along the Urubamba River, accompanied by gourmet meals, set the stage for exploring the iconic UNESCO World Heritage site. The architectural prowess of the Incas left many in awe, pondering the site’s construction and eventual abandonment.

Easter Island

Easter Island, or Rapa Nui, is renowned for its enigmatic Moai statues. Guests on the Cruise Specialists tour visited Hanga Roa, observing several Moai on platforms and learning about the island’s history. The opportunity to tender ashore is never guaranteed due to sea conditions, but fortunately, the weather permitted a successful visit. The day brought a mix of intense sun, rain, and welcome clouds. Navigating the island’s rutted roads in minibuses added to the adventure, with free-range horses and cows occasionally blocking the path.

Pitcairn Island

Pitcairn Island’s history is closely tied to the 1789 mutiny on the HMS Bounty. Today, the island has a population of around 43, with all but 8 residents descended from the original mutineers. The Mayor delivered a lecture detailing the island’s past and present, highlighting traditions like the annual burning of a Bounty replica on January 23 to commemorate the original event 235 years ago. Islanders come aboard and sell some of their homemade original carvings and such specialties as honey from their bee hives.  Several passengers bought cards that will arrive at home some time after this cruise is completed.

Cruising Europe in Winter: A Growing Trend Travelers Should Know About

For decades, the cruise calendar followed a predictable rhythm. Ships spent summer exploring Europe and the Mediterranean, then repositioned to the Caribbean or other warm-weather destinations for winter. But that rhythm is changing. More cruise lines are extending their European seasons — and in some cases operating there year-round — creating exciting new opportunities for travelers willing to experience Europe in the quieter winter months.
