How Cruise Lines Cater to Solo Travelers

Today, cruise lines are more often aligning their onboard and ashore activities for solo cruisers. You are already among like-minded travelers, so making friends can be as easy as attending a hosted onboard cocktail party or dinner. Celebrity Cruises sets aside a solos’ table at dinner and offers help with meeting other solo travelers. Silversea’s voyages include a Champagne welcome reception where fellow solo cruisers can connect. Plus, on some sailings, there are Gentlemen Hosts available to greet solo passengers. Norwegian Cruise Line offers single staterooms that share access to an exclusive common area on select ships, where you’ll find TVs, a bartender and hosted gatherings. Solo travelers sailing on Seabourn may be more likely to be invited to a table hosted by an officer or staff member.

What Do Solo Cruisers Pay?

Traditionally, fares are based on double occupancy; that is, two people sharing a cabin or suite. When one person sails alone, they have historically paid as though they are two people. However, recognizing the increasing demand for solo cruising, many cruise lines offer special fares or opportunities for solo cruisers.

Solo Supplements

When solo travelers pay 200% of the cabin rate, this is called 100% single supplement. As a sailing date approaches, some cruise lines may decide to provide some of the unsold cabins for a special price. Other cruise lines offer reduced supplements further out in advance. We would consider 50% (and below) a good value. Reduced supplements or even waived supplements (0%) are based on availability and can sell out quickly.

Several cruise lines offer single occupancy cabins that are specially priced. They are generally smaller; however, that is changing too. For example, Celebrity’s Edge-Class ships offer Infinite Veranda solo staterooms. Royal Caribbean offers studio cabins called virtual balcony cabins (inside cabins with screens projecting live images from outside) as well as true balconies. Cunard’s single staterooms are some of the largest in the industry. Pro Tip: These specialty cabins are limited, and considering the high demand, it’s wise to book well in advance to secure your spot.
