Danube Christmas Delight Cruise
December 10–17, 2025 | Budapest to Passau aboard Viking Gymir
There is something truly magical about Europe during the holidays—and Cruise Specialists Cruise Consultant Matthew Spencer brought that magic to life while hosting a “Danube Christmas Delights” river cruise aboard the beautiful Viking Gymir. From twinkling markets to storybook towns and grand cathedrals, this festive journey perfectly captured the spirit of the season.
A Festive Beginning in Budapest
The journey began with an overnight stay in Budapest, allowing guests to experience the city both day and night as it sparkled under holiday lights. The Christmas season adds an extra layer of enchantment to this already romantic destination.
At Vörösmarty Square, Budapest’s largest Christmas market, the air was filled with the aroma of traditional Hungarian specialties and the charm of handcrafted goods. Nearby, the cozy St. Stephen’s Basilica market offered mulled wine and mesmerizing nightly light shows projected onto the church’s façade. Across the Danube in Buda, Fo Square blended Old-World charm with festive cheer, complete with seasonal events and even an outdoor ice rink. Guests also admired an ornate cathedral beautifully decorated for the season, setting a memorable tone for the week.
Bratislava’s Cozy Holiday Spirit
In Bratislava, guests strolled through the charming Old Town, where festive lights and a towering Christmas tree created a warm holiday atmosphere. A standout treat was Trdelník—a traditional sweet, hollow pastry rolled and baked to perfection.
The city transformed into a winter wonderland, with the medieval Bratislava Castle overlooking illuminated streets below. Vendors filled Hlavné Námestie Square with handcrafted goods, while the scent of mulled wine and Slovak delicacies lingered in the crisp air. A specially decorated Christmas tram added a whimsical touch, and an enchanting organ concert at the Gothic St. Martin’s Cathedral provided a beautiful cultural highlight.
Vienna: Classic Elegance and Christmas Magic
Vienna delivered timeless elegance and holiday charm at every turn. Guests explored the city’s grand boulevards, visited its renowned Christmas markets, and warmed up with cups of rich hot chocolate. A peaceful stroll through the Palace Garden added a picturesque pause to the day.
Throughout the city, festive markets transformed Vienna’s historic squares into magical gathering places. Highlights included the Schönbrunn market set against the baroque Habsburg palace, Freyung’s artisan stalls, and the atmospheric markets at Am Hof and Belvedere Square, where music, lights, and stunning architecture created a true fairytale setting.
Wachau Valley & Göttweig Abbey
Sailing through the Wachau Valley offered breathtaking winter scenery, with rolling hills, vineyards, and quaint villages lining the Danube. A visit to Göttweig Abbey added a cultural and artistic dimension to the journey, where guests admired impressive architecture and a magnificent painted cathedral ceiling that left a lasting impression. It was also a tasty treat to be able to sample the Abbey’s fantastic self-produced apricot jams and wine.
Krems & Linz: Culture, Cuisine, and Cheer
In Krems, guests enjoyed a guided city tour followed by an authentic Austrian meal, complete with traditional sausage. Once a vital medieval trade center, Krems retains its charm through cobblestone streets, historic architecture, and a deep-rooted wine culture. Surrounded by sun-drenched vineyards, the region is renowned for producing exceptional Riesling and Grüner Veltliner wines.
Linz continued the festive spirit with its lively Christmas markets and inviting Old Town. The baroque main square provided a beautiful backdrop as guests explored stalls filled with seasonal treats and local specialties—including the famous Linzer Torte. At the Volksgarten, a charming nativity display and classical music added to the city’s holiday ambiance, while countless photo opportunities captured the joy of the season.
A Grand Finale in Passau
The cruise concluded with an overnight stay in Passau, a picturesque town where three rivers meet. Known for its striking architecture and baroque charm, Passau was beautifully adorned for the holidays.
Centered around St. Stephen’s Cathedral—home to Europe’s largest pipe organ—the Christkindlmarkt invited guests to browse handcrafted gifts and indulge in festive treats. The sound of choirs singing echoed through the cathedral and into the town’s narrow streets, creating a magical and memorable finale.
From historic cities and scenic landscapes to festive markets and cultural treasures, this “Danube Christmas Delights” sailing was a celebration of everything that makes the holiday season so special. Under Matthew Spencer’s expert guidance, guests experienced not just the destinations, but the joy, flavors, and shared moments that made this journey truly unforgettable.
