Experience France One Recipe at a Time with AmaWaterway

By Lisa Vongphachanh

AmaWaterways is adding a meaningful new layer to river cruising in France—and if you love food, culture, and authentic connection, this one is worth paying attention to.

A More Personal Taste of France

AmaWaterways has introduced Cooking with Mamie, a new culinary experience designed to bring guests closer to the heart of French culture. Available exclusively on select Paris & Normandy sailings aboard AmaDante and AmaLyra, this program goes beyond traditional onboard dining by focusing on something much more personal: the people and traditions behind the cuisine.

At Cruise Specialists, we love seeing experiences that turn travel into connection—and this one does exactly that.

Meet “Mamie”

At the center of the experience is a charming concept: French grandmothers—les mamies—sharing their time, stories, and recipes directly with guests.

In partnership with Atelier des Mamies, AmaWaterways brings these local hosts onboard in Paris for small, intimate cooking sessions (just 10 guests at a time). Together, you’ll create classic French desserts like tarte Tatin and madeleines while learning the techniques and traditions that have been passed down through generations.

It’s hands-on, it’s personal, and it’s the kind of experience you simply won’t find in a cookbook.

From Ship to Shore: Parisian Pastry at Its Best

The experience doesn’t stop on the ship. Guests extending their journey with a pre- or post-cruise stay in Paris can take part in an optional excursion: “Le Macaron: A Parisian Patisserie Experience.”

Set in a cozy Montmartre workshop, this session offers the chance to master macarons alongside a French grandmother in an authentic, welcoming environment. It’s less about perfection—and more about the shared joy of creating something delicious together.

Why We Love It

AmaWaterways has long been known for its immersive approach to river cruising, and Cooking with Mamie takes that to the next level. It’s not just about tasting French cuisine—it’s about understanding it, experiencing it, and connecting with the people who keep these traditions alive.

Combined with AmaWaterways’ thoughtfully curated land programs—featuring centrally located hotels, guided tours, and seamless transfers—this experience fits perfectly into a journey that’s both enriching and effortless.

Our Take

If you’re looking for a river cruise that feels more intimate, more cultural, and more memorable, this is a standout addition. It’s ideal for travelers who appreciate local experiences, enjoy culinary discovery, and value those small, heartfelt moments that make a trip unforgettable.

If France is on your list, this is a beautiful way to experience it—one recipe, one story, and one connection at a time.

Postcards From A World Cruise: Singapore

Visiting Singapore is the highlight of many voyages in the South China Sea, including Grand Asia sailings, and it has been a marquee stop for our world cruises including our current one on the Regent Seven Seas Mariner. This affluent and independent Asian city-state is notable for its awesome sights and heights as well as its world-famous Singapore Sling cocktails made with gin, cherry liqueur, Bénédictine, Cointreau, pineapple juice, lime juice, grenadine, Angostura bitters and topped with soda water.

Postcards From A Regent World Cruise: Seychelles

In 1958, Ian Fleming, of James Bond fame, came to Victoria, Mahe in the Seychelles, a beautiful archipelago of 115 islands in the Indian Ocean often referred to as “Africa’s paradise.” He had come reportedly to cure a case of writer’s block. And if so, it worked, as shortly after he wrote the short story The Hildebrand Rarity and his collection of short stories, For Your Eyes Only, both appearing in print in 1960.
