Holland America Line Unveils $500 Million Fleet Evolution

By John Bell

Holland America Line is making a major investment in the future of its fleet—one that blends exciting new features with the timeless onboard experience their guests already love.

With more than $500 million dedicated to enhancements across six of its mid-sized ships, this initiative—called “Evolution”—is designed to introduce new venues, expand accommodations, and better reflect how people travel today.

As Holland America President Beth Bodensteiner shared:
"This investment allows us to introduce experiences and venues that are new to the fleet, add Pinnacle Class favorites like Grand Dutch Café, and create new stateroom categories designed for the way people travel today, all while preserving the perfectly sized ship experience that defines Holland America."

Which Ships Are Being Renovated?

The Evolution program will span six ships:

  • Vista Class: Oosterdam, Zuiderdam, Westerdam, Noordam
  • Signature Class: Nieuw Amsterdam, Eurodam

These ships are already favorites among seasoned cruisers for their comfortable size—large enough to offer variety, but small enough to feel uncrowded and refined. Holland America is keeping that balance intact while enhancing what matters most to today’s travelers.

Oosterdam Leads the Way in 2027

The first phase begins with Oosterdam, debuting its transformation in fall 2027. And based on what we’re seeing so far, this is not a light refresh—it’s a meaningful upgrade.

What’s New Onboard

  • Grand Dutch Café arrives
A guest favorite previously only found on Pinnacle Class ships, this European-inspired café will now be part of the Oosterdam experience—perfect for a relaxed coffee, light bite, or casual meet-up.
  • Expanded and reimagined accommodations
Oosterdam will add 76 new staterooms, increasing capacity while still preserving the “room at the rail” feel that Holland America guests appreciate.

A Smarter Approach to Staterooms

One of the most important changes is how Holland America is rethinking accommodations—adding flexibility and options that reflect how people actually cruise today.

Highlights include:

  • Solo Verandah Staterooms (NEW)
Purpose-built for solo travelers, these 30 staterooms include private balconies, workspace, and full amenities—no compromise for traveling alone.
  • Bridgeview Suites (NEW)
Two stunning suites with 900 square feet of space and sweeping 180-degree views from the front of the ship. With wraparound balconies and separate living areas, these are designed for guests who want something truly special.
  • Reimagined Pinnacle Suite
The largest suite ever offered on a Vista Class ship, featuring 1,550 square feet of elevated living space, panoramic views, and distinct areas for relaxing and entertaining.
  • Vista Suites debut on Oosterdam
A popular category from Pinnacle Class ships, these spacious suites will now be available here for the first time—bringing more premium options to the Vista Class experience.

The Grand Dutch Café Expands

The addition of the Grand Dutch Café is more than just a new venue—it’s a signal of what guests consistently value.

Rooted in Holland America’s Dutch heritage and inspired by European café culture, it’s an easy, all-day gathering spot—whether you’re grabbing a quick espresso or lingering over a light meal.

What This Means for Cruisers

This isn’t about making ships bigger or flashier. It’s about making them better:

  • More choice in accommodations
  • More of the venues guests already love
  • Thoughtful additions that enhance—not overwhelm—the experience

And importantly, Holland America is doing all of this while preserving the mid-sized ship advantage that sets them apart.

What’s Next

Oosterdam is just the beginning. Additional details for the remaining five ships will be announced in the coming months as the Evolution program continues to roll out.
