Celebrity Xcel Ship Review

By John Bell

I just got off the Celebrity Xcel, and this is one of those ships that’s very easy to like—and even easier to recommend.

Celebrity really nailed the balance here. The design feels elevated, but not in a way that ever feels stuffy or overly formal. It’s polished, modern, and comfortable all at the same time. The public spaces flow well (which matters more than people think), and there are plenty of spots to either be part of the energy or carve out your own quiet corner. It just works.

The cabins follow that same philosophy—clean, calming, and thoughtfully designed. Nothing flashy for the sake of it, just really well done spaces that feel good to come back to at the end of the day.

Now, what stood out most to me is the vibe. This is a fun, lively ship. There’s always something going on, but it never feels chaotic. It’s social when you want it to be, relaxed when you don’t. Celebrity has clearly leaned into creating a more energetic onboard experience—and it pays off.

Dining is a big part of that. There’s a ton of variety, and it’s not just quantity—it’s quality and atmosphere. You can dress up and have a more elevated night out, or keep things casual and still eat really well. Same goes for the entertainment—there’s enough going on that you’ll actually find yourself planning your evenings a bit.

A few standout areas worth calling out:

The Retreat – This is still one of the best “ship within a ship” concepts out there. If you’re staying in a suite, the private sundeck, lounge, and restaurant create a completely different level of experience. It feels exclusive without being pretentious, and the service here is consistently excellent.

The Spa – A really well-done space. It’s not just about treatments—the thermal areas are worth spending time in on their own. It’s the kind of place you go for an hour and end up staying half the day.

The Bazaar – This was one of the more interesting additions. It brings a bit of a market-style, social energy onboard—something a little different from the traditional cruise setup. Great for wandering, grabbing a bite, and just soaking in the atmosphere.

And yes… I found the speakeasy. I’m not putting it in writing here, but it’s a fun little hidden gem that adds a layer of discovery to the ship. If you’re sailing on Xcel, send me an email at [email protected] and ask how to get in.

Bottom line: Celebrity Cruises has created a ship that feels current, energetic, and genuinely enjoyable to spend time on. It’s a great fit for someone who wants a more modern cruise experience—something that feels a little more alive, without giving up comfort or style.

Postcards From A Regent World Cruise: Richards Bay, South Africa

The 1985 song lyrics by Gayla Peeve, “I want a hippopotamus for Christmas, Only a hippopotamus will do…” came to mind as my husband Humberto and I looked over the tour offerings for Richards Bay, a major port in the heart of the Zululand region of Kwa-Zulu-Natal in South Africa during our 2026 Regent Seven Seas Mariner world cruise. When we saw the description for the St. Lucia Wetlands Nature Reserve tour saying the two-hour boat tour frequently encounters crocodiles and hippos, we did not hesitate and signed up.
