Viking Orders Two New Expedition Ships

By Lisa Vongphachanh

Expedition cruising continues to be one of the fastest-growing segments of the cruise industry, and Viking is making it clear that it sees tremendous opportunity ahead. The cruise line recently announced plans to build two new expedition ships, expanding its fleet and reinforcing its commitment to exploration-focused travel.

The new vessels are scheduled for delivery in 2030 and 2031 and will join Viking's existing expedition fleet, Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris. Each ship will carry 378 guests and will be certified as a Polar Class 6 for operations in remote polar regions. While specific details about the ships have not yet been released, Viking has confirmed they will be purpose-built expedition vessels designed to continue the brand's distinctive approach to adventure cruising.

For travelers, this announcement is significant because it signals continued growth in the expedition cruise market. As more guests seek experiences that go beyond traditional cruise itineraries, demand for voyages to destinations such as Antarctica, the Arctic and other remote regions continues to rise. Viking's investment demonstrates confidence in the future of expedition travel and the growing interest in immersive, destination-focused experiences.

Since launching its expedition program, Viking has differentiated itself with a strong emphasis on enrichment, science and discovery. The line's current expedition ships accommodate just 378 guests, allowing access to locations that larger vessels cannot reach while providing a more intimate onboard experience. Guests enjoy expert-led lectures, field experiences and opportunities to learn about the environments and cultures they visit.

The announcement also reflects a broader trend across the cruise industry. Cruise lines continue to invest in expedition ships as travelers increasingly prioritize meaningful experiences, wildlife encounters and opportunities to explore some of the world's most remote destinations. Whether it's witnessing glaciers in Antarctica, searching for polar wildlife in the Arctic or discovering lesser-known corners of the globe, expedition cruising offers a unique blend of adventure and comfort that continues to attract experienced travelers.

As Viking looks toward the next decade, its newest expedition ships will help expand access to these extraordinary journeys. While travelers will have to wait a few years before stepping aboard, the announcement is an exciting reminder that the future of expedition cruising remains bright, with even more opportunities for exploration on the horizon.
