Having spent two years with Hurtigruten, now HX, and helping lead the North American inaugural launch of MS Roald Amundsen, I recently had the opportunity to experience the ship from a completely different perspective, as a guest. My wife, Dianne, and I sailed on the 10-Day Alaska Expedition Cruise from Vancouver to Whittier, and it reminded me why expedition cruising is one of the most rewarding ways to experience Alaska.
A Familiar Ship with a Personal Connection
My first impression of MS Roald Amundsen was how beautiful she remains. Walking on board felt a bit like coming home. One of the highlights of embarkation day was seeing the ship model I had commissioned for the North American inaugural displayed on Deck 5. It was special to share that piece of history with Dianne and revisit a ship that holds many memories for me.
Embarkation in Vancouver was seamless. We arrived, completed the check-in process and were directed straight to our stateroom. It was one of the smoothest boarding experiences I've had.
Comfortable Accommodations Designed for Scenic Cruising
We stayed in a Polar Outside cabin, which featured a large picture window perfect for viewing Alaska's ever-changing scenery. The cabin felt spacious and comfortable, with two chairs positioned by the window where we could relax and enjoy the views. The bed was exceptionally comfortable, and the European-style comforters made it easy to settle in after a day of exploration.
The Heart of the Ship
The space where we spent most of our time was the Explorer Lounge. With expansive windows, comfortable seating and a welcoming atmosphere, it quickly became our favorite place on board. Whether enjoying a morning coffee, reading a book or simply admiring the landscape, it was the perfect spot to experience Alaska from the comfort of the ship. In the evenings, live music added to the relaxed ambiance.
Another standout feature was the large sauna with its dramatic picture window overlooking Alaska's wilderness. The outdoor hot tubs were equally memorable. Sitting in warm water while gazing at glaciers and snow-capped mountains is an experience I'll never forget.
Dining That Exceeded Expectations
We primarily dined at Aune, the ship's main restaurant, and Fredheim, a casual dining venue, where the food and service were consistently excellent. Both offered plenty of variety, and every meal was thoughtfully prepared.
We also had the opportunity to dine at Lindstrøm, the ship's Scandinavian-inspired fine dining restaurant. Complimentary for suite guests at breakfast, lunch and dinner, Lindstrøm is also available to other guests for dinner for an additional fee. The elevated menu, attentive service and intimate atmosphere made for a memorable dining experience.
An Expedition Experience Unlike Traditional Alaska Cruises
What truly sets HX apart is the expedition focus. The onboard expedition team delivered outstanding presentations that deepened our understanding of the region's history, wildlife and environment. These talks added tremendous value to the overall experience.
Life On board
A typical day usually began with breakfast in Aune before setting out for the morning's activities. Depending on the itinerary, we might head out on a Zodiac excursion, explore a remote port or enjoy a scenic cruising experience.
Afternoons often included lunch, time in the Explorer Lounge and opportunities to take in the incredible scenery. Evenings were relaxed, with dinner followed by more time in the lounge reflecting on the day's adventures and connecting with fellow travelers. And perhaps a dip in the hot tub.
With only about 360 guests on board, MS Roald Amundsen offers a much more intimate atmosphere than larger cruise ships. We met travelers from around the world and enjoyed the camaraderie that naturally develops when sharing such unique experiences.
My Final Thoughts
I've experienced Alaska many times throughout my career, but this voyage reminded me why expedition cruising is such a special way to explore the region. The combination of a beautifully designed ship, exceptional expedition staff, immersive Zodiac experiences and stunning scenery creates something far deeper than a traditional cruise.
If you're looking for a more immersive Alaska experience and want to connect with the destination rather than simply observe it, I highly recommend HX and MS Roald Amundsen. You don't need to be an extreme adventurer, just someone curious enough to experience Alaska in a more meaningful way.
This was truly a once-in-a-lifetime journey, and one I won't soon forget.
