Santorini, Greece

Although technically not in the Mediterranean Sea, this stop is one frequently included Mediterranean voyages. Often referred to as the “Gem of the Aegean Sea,” Santorini is an archipelago of jewel-toned islands created from a volcanic eruption that took place thousands of years ago. Fortunately, the islands’ resulting mineral-rich soil makes Santorini one of the best wine producers in Greece—perfect for souvenirs or mementos to remember your travels. One of the area’s most compelling places to explore is the Akrotiri excavation site. This Minoan settlement was once a thriving hillside village before it was decimated by the same eruption that formed Santorini’s archipelago. Modern archaeologists began excavating this enigmatic location in 1967 and continue to do so today. Visit Akrotiri during a shore excursion to learn about the past and admire the perfectly preserved frescoes and other artifacts on display.

Haifa, Israel

In a land held sacred by more than half of the world, Haifa is the point of entry for passengers making a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. Before heading to the more well-known cities in Israel—Jerusalem, Nazareth, Tel Aviv—don’t miss Haifa’s most recognizable attraction: The Bahai Gardens. These sprawling gardens make for a wonderful place for a walk up the side of Mount Carmel to the Shrine of the Báb. Spanning almost a kilometer in area, the 19 terraces provide a serene setting in which visitors can admire the foliage and reflect along the journey. Those who reach the top can take in the splendor of Haifa Bay before entering the gold-domed Shrine of the Báb, the holiest site for adherents of the Bahai faith.

Istanbul, Turkey

This is another port not located in the Mediterranean Sea, yet is included in many Mediterranean itineraries with Regent. As the largest city in Turkey, Istanbul beckons millions of tourists to its winding avenues each year. It was a hub of activity when it was known as the capital city of Constantinople during the Roman and Ottoman Empires. The city connected the Asian and European continents along prosperous trading routes that continue to flourish today. The best way to experience customary Istanbul as it existed for centuries would be to take time to visit the Grand Bazaar, a bustling market first erected in the 1400s. More than 60 streets are encapsulated here, sporting wares like traditional spices, carpets and jewelry. A word to the wise—bartering and haggling are to be expected, so don’t hesitate to try to negotiate the price.
