Explaining Princess Cruises MedallionClass®

Dayna Engberg

The ultimate technological tool to enhance the cruise experience, the OceanMedallionTM is a Princess Cruises exclusive. Just larger than a quarter, this wearable device facilitates many cruise ship functions and services in smart and simplified new ways, from keyless stateroom entry to touch-free boarding and more. We were able to experience it firsthand on our Alaskan sailing aboard the new ship, Discovery Princess®. Keep reading to learn more about our experience with the OceanMedallion.

About the OceanMedallion

Even before your cruise departs, the Princess Cruise experience begins with downloading the MedallionClass® mobile app and completing necessary forms to become OceanReady®—Princess Cruises’ term for checking in for your cruise and customizing your experience in advance. You’ll have the opportunity to select your OceanMedallion design, which will be laser-etched with your name and sailing date and either shipped to your home address prior to departure or available for pickup at the embarkation port. The token can be carried in your pocket, on the provided lanyard, or worn as a wristband, bracelet or pendant.

Getting Around

Perhaps the most useful function of the OceanMedallion is that it makes navigating the ship a breeze. From the moment you step on board, you’ll use the OceanMedallion for easy, contactless boarding. As you arrive at your stateroom, the smart technology senses your OceanMedallion and unlocks your room as you approach the door. Upon leaving your stateroom, you can access real-time turn-by-turn directions through the MedallionClass app, in conjunction with your mobile device, to find your way to events, get directions to restaurants, and even find your friends and family members.

Food and Drink on Demand

Because the OceanMedallion uses smart technology to pinpoint your exact location, it’s easy to order food and drinks no matter where you are on the ship. Whether you’d like a cocktail delivered poolside or late-night snacks in your stateroom, you can do it all through the MedallionClass app. In addition to food and drink orders, you can also request stateroom amenities, such as new towels and bathrobes, turndown service, plug adaptors and more. Pretty much anything you’d otherwise need to request from a crew member or stateroom attendant can now be done right in the app.

Personalized Service

When you link a payment method in the MedallionClass app, your OceanMedallion also becomes a contactless payment method for purchases you make onboard the ship. Since your OceanMedallion is linked to your name and photo, crew members can easily confirm your identity for purchases, address you by name and access your ship account for things like dining reservations or assisting with your daily schedule. Your stateroom attendant even knows when you’ve left the room so they can tidy up while you’re away.

Fun Features

The OceanMedallion isn’t just useful, it’s also fun. Around the ship, the OceanMedallion unlocks interactive wall portals to help you find your way, see what’s taking place around the ship at any given time and manage your daily itinerary. Browse and find events happening during your voyage, from trivia to live music, evening theater performances and more, then save them to your personal itinerary for later. The app will even tell you how many people are attending each event or if certain timeslots are almost full.

In combination with the MedallionClass app, you can also watch TV and play games within the app, create a custom virtual avatar and play wager-based casino games right from your phone. During Games Under the Stars, your phone can even be used as a video game controller for interactive games on the big screen. With all its fun and useful features, the OceanMedallion is a huge enhancement to the Princess Cruises experience.
