Six Ways To Save On Costly On-Board Internet

[by contributor Geoff Edwards].

At first the wire worked, but then we set sail.

Only a decade ago, Internet communication from a cruise ship was practically nonexistent. I was on Rotterdam when Holland America Line started to offer e-mail in 1999. But this was not the World Wide Web, mind you, only a link to it. E-mail was sent to Seattle where the company would forward it.

Shore Excursions In Luleå Sweden: Gammelstad Church Cottage

The Avid Cruiser visits Gammelstad, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that represents the best-preserved example of a “church village.” Villages like Gammelstad were once found throughout northern Scandinavia. The 424 wooden houses that radiate from the early 15th-century stone church, were used only on Sundays and at religious festivals to house worshippers from the surrounding countryside who lived too far away from home to return on the same day. Gammelstad is fewer than 20 minutes by car or bus from where the cruise ships dock in Luleå.

Anticipating Oasis

Hi kids, My flight has landed in Miami, and I am boarding a bus to transfer to Fort Lauderdale, where I will step aboard Oasis of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise ship, for the second time. You’ll remember that dad went to Turku, Finland, to board Oasis when it was still under construction a couple of months ago. It will be great to see it complete. You’ve been anticipating Oasis ever since its inception was made public. I wish that you two were with me, but this an industry function with business meetings and much work – and I am only on board two nights. Would that be fair? To drag you kids off after only two nights? I don’t think so. Anyway, I’ll send regular updates, photos and possibly a video. That’s it for now. I am off to Oasis. Love, Dad

Planet Gannet: Gaspesie

The morning that I boarded a boat to Bonaventure Island, Perce Rock was crowned by a wispy cloud. It was an indescribably beautiful sight, one of the world’s largest sheer rock formations and natural arches jutting out from the water in all of its sublime splendor.

Carnival’s Newest Ship A ‘Dream’ For Families

Overheard in the elevator, a boy, perhaps 8, says to his mother, “I love this ship mommy. You know how much I love it?”

“How much?” she asks.

“So much that I’m going to live on it.”

Perhaps the kid should take a look at ResidenSea’s live-aboard ship The World if he plans to pitch camp at sea for good, but for vacations, it’s easy to see why kids would love Carnival Dream.

For starters, more than 19,000 square feet of space is dedicated to children, ‘tweens and teens. Next, there’s Carnival WaterWorks, the largest aqua park at sea. WaterWorks features a 303-foot-long, four-deck-high Twister water slide, the longest at sea, and a 104-foot long spiral water slide known as the DrainPipe. It leads into a giant funnel for an exhilarating conclusion down the slippery slope. There’s also a pair of dual-lane 80-foot-long racing slides and various water spray apparatus with squirting fountains, splash zones, “dump buckets” and more.

Supervised programs cater to thee age groups: Camp Carnival (ages 2-11), Circle “C” (12-14) and Club O2 (15-17).

A new category of accommodations features deluxe ocean-view staterooms with two bathrooms (one with a junior tub). And many accommodations can sleep up to five guests.

Carnival Cruise Lines carries more than 625,000 children annually aboard its 22-vessel “Fun Ship” fleet. That’s equivalent to filing six of Carnival’s Fantasy-class vessels for an entire year, or to put it another way, roughly half of the total number of kids carried by the entire North American cruise industry.

Carnival Dream will sail year-round from Port Canaveral, Florida, on eastern and western Caribbean itineraries, including new calls at Mahogany Bay, Carnival’s new port in Roatan.

Carnival Dream Delivers

I’ve written this many times, but it merits repeating: Carnival Cruise Lines does a better job than any other cruise line in delivering its brand promise. And that brand promise, which has been the same since the maiden voyage in 1972 of the company’s first ship, essentially boils down to this: Sail with us, and you will have fun.

“We have one basic goal, and that is to sell fun at a great value,” Carnival President and CEO Gerry Cahill told journalists this morning aboard the new Carnival Dream.

Docked at Pier 88 in Manhattan’s west side, Carnival’s newest and largest addition to the “Fun Ship” fleet is abuzz with shows, live music, entertainers and people enjoying themselves. The new ship features many “fun” innovations, such as a huge WaterWorks aqua park with the longest water slide at sea.

Look to this space for more about how the new Carnival Dream caters to families, with a new category stateroom featuring two bathrooms and five berths.
